Position Overview
A well-established mechanical contracting company specializing in plumbing, heating & air conditioning, and fire protection services is seeking an experienced Purchasing Buyer to join its team.
The Purchasing Buyer will be responsible for sourcing and purchasing equipment, materials, parts, and supplies required for ongoing construction projects and service operations. This individual will work closely with Project Managers, Estimators, field personnel, vendors, and internal operations teams to ensure materials are purchased at competitive prices and delivered according to project schedules.
The ideal candidate will have purchasing or procurement experience within plumbing, HVAC, fire protection, mechanical contracting, construction, or a related industry and understand the importance of cost control, vendor relationships, material availability, and project deadlines.
Key Responsibilities
- Purchase equipment, materials, parts, tools, and supplies for plumbing, HVAC, heating, air conditioning, and fire protection projects
- Review purchase requisitions, project requirements, specifications, and material lists
- Obtain and compare vendor quotes based on pricing, quality, availability, and delivery schedules
- Create, issue, and manage purchase orders from initial request through final delivery
- Negotiate pricing, terms, lead times, and delivery schedules with suppliers
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with manufacturers, distributors, supply houses, and vendors
- Coordinate closely with Project Managers, Estimators, service teams, and field personnel to meet project schedules
- Track open purchase orders and proactively address delays, backorders, shortages, and supply-chain issues
- Source alternative products and suppliers when necessary to prevent project delays
- Monitor material and equipment costs and identify opportunities for cost savings
- Verify pricing, quantities, specifications, and delivery information on purchase orders
- Resolve discrepancies involving invoices, deliveries, damaged materials, shortages, and incorrect shipments
- Maintain accurate purchasing records, vendor information, pricing, and supporting documentation
- Assist with inventory and material planning as needed
- Monitor market conditions, pricing changes, product availability, and supplier lead times
Qualifications
- Previous experience in purchasing, buying, procurement, or supply chain
- Experience within plumbing, heating & air conditioning, fire protection, mechanical contracting, or construction strongly preferred
- Knowledge of mechanical equipment, materials, parts, and industry terminology is highly desirable
- Established relationships with local or regional suppliers and supply houses are a plus
- Strong vendor management and negotiation skills
- Ability to understand material lists, specifications, purchase orders, and project documentation
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and purchasing requests in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication and problem-solving abilities
- Comfortable working directly with Project Managers, vendors, suppliers, service teams, and field personnel
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Outlook
- Experience with purchasing, ERP, or construction management software is a plus
Compensation & Benefits
Salary: $70,000–$85,000 annually, depending on experience.
