Job Description

Mechanical Drafter: Experienced (Level III)

Full – Time / Day shift position

Salary: $24.90 to $34.13 (dependent upon experience)

Job Description:

Based in Albuquerque New Mexico, Thunder Scientific Corp. (TSC), the world's leading manufacturer of NIST-proven, two-pressure humidity calibration systems, has a prospective opening for an experienced Mechanical Drafter (Level III) with practical SolidWorks drafting experience. At TSC, you will play a crucial role in supporting our engineering and design team. Your responsibilities will include creating and revising detailed technical drawings and 3D models using SolidWorks, ensuring all designs meet industry, customer-specific, and in-house standards.

Responsibilities:

Drawings and models:

  • Create, revise, and release production drawings, 3D models, and assemblies in SolidWorks to in-house drafting standards.
  • Maintain the drawing library in SolidWorks PDM: revision control, file structure, templates, and release workflows.
  • Process Engineering Change Orders: incorporate approved changes, keep BOMs accurate against the ERP system, and route releases through PDM.
  • Keep SolidWorks PDM healthy, e.g., file structure, workflows, templates, and user access.

Vendor and project support:

  • Prepare drawing packages for quotes, answer vendor drawing questions, and help disposition nonconforming parts with the responsible engineer.
  • Support new-product development with prototype drawings, pilot-build documentation, and participation in design reviews.

Certification support:

  • Maintain the critical-component list and engineering design files for UL/IEC 61010-1 certified products.
  • Evaluate proposed changes to ensure no negative impact on critical component’s certification.
  • Maintain all engineering design files needed for certification support, e.g., supplier data, construction details, and clause-by-clause evidence.

Additive manufacturing:

  • Prepare production parts for printing: select process, material, orientation, and support; build and maintain slicer profiles; control print files.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain the in-house 3D printers; troubleshoot print failures; manage filament, and consumable inventory.
  • Post-process and inspect printed parts to drawing requirements.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Associate degree in Mechanical Drafting, Design Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related technical field with a minimum of 2 years of applied drafting or mechanical design experience; OR equivalent professional experience demonstrating competency in a regulated or production manufacturing environment.
  • Proven proficiency in SolidWorks consistent with the Certified SolidWorks Associate (CSWA) exam.
  • Experience with SolidWorks PDM or similar product data management system(s).
  • Experience creating both small and large assemblies.
  • Working knowledge of configuration management principles.
  • Strong understanding of ECO workflows, including the formal review, approval, and documentation processes required to modify released engineering drawings.
  • Strong understanding of applied engineering fundamentals and manufacturing processes as they relate to drafting and design execution.
  • Familiarity with iterative prototyping and design workflows.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accountability for drawing and documentation accuracy.
  • Effective problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to interpret and convey technical information clearly.
  • Experienced in technical writing, including creation of work instructions.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365.
  • Motivated, well-organized, and proactive team member aligned with company values.
  • Must be drug and alcohol free.

Preferred:

  • Experience with GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
  • Experience with SolidWorks Routing.
  • Technical Writing experience, including creation of work instructions.
  • Familiarity with or interest in additive manufacturing (3D Printing).

Physical Challenges:

  • Ability to operate hardware and software supporting the drafting needs of TSC.
  • Consistent sitting for many hours at one time (50%+ of normal shift).
  • Occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Able to lift up to 25 pounds.

Salary and Benefits:

  • Thunder Scientific Corp. offers industry-competitive salary based on experience.
  • Competitive benefits include insurance (health, dental, vision, and life), short/long-term disability coverage, vacation/sick leave time, tuition assistance, profit sharing, and 401K.
  • A collaborative and innovative work environment.
  • Work schedule flexibility.
  • Opportunity to contribute to challenging and meaningful projects.
