Our client is a privately held B2B services company doing roughly $50 million in revenue, with a leadership team that values straight answers and clean numbers. Finance is a lean, capable team, and the company wants a Controller who will run accounting day to day and lead that team into its next chapter. The work is not exotic: clean closes, accurate payroll, disciplined cash, and reporting leadership can trust. What makes it interesting is how much of the business runs through payroll, so accuracy and controls there matter every single cycle.

โข You close the books yourself and lead the people who help you do it
โข You hold yourself to getting payroll and the close right, every single cycle
โข You are steady, fair and clear, the kind of leader a strong team wants to follow through a transition
โข You like a lean team where your work is visible and your judgment matters
This is not the seat for someone who wants to set strategy from a distance, or whose recent work is mostly FP&A or public accounting. The split is roughly half hands-on accounting, half leadership.

โข The monthly, quarterly and year-end close, the general ledger, reconciliations and financial statements
โข Payroll accounting and controls across more than one entity and more than one state
โข Billing, AR and AP oversight, including the checks that make sure every customer is invoiced correctly
โข Cash, banking relationships and the line of credit
โข Budgets and budget-to-actual reporting for the CEO and leadership team
โข The annual audit or review, outside tax coordination, and 401(k) administration
โข Helping finish a systems upgrade that is already underway
โข Leading four direct reports across accounting, payroll, AR and AP

โข A degree in accounting or finance (bachelor's or higher)
โข Eight or more years in accounting, with real time spent running the function as a Controller or Assistant Controller and managing people
โข Hands-on ownership of the close, the general ledger and reconciliations, not only oversight
โข The ability to work on site in San Diego five days a week

โข Experience in a services business where payroll is the largest cost
โข Payroll across several states, and books that span more than one entity
โข Experience leading or supporting an ERP implementation
โข Audit, banking and line-of-credit relationships you have owned yourself
โข A CPA

โข Annual bonus of up to 10% of compensation, tied to company performance
