Position Summary

Erie Strayer Company is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design, development, and manufacturing of heavy industrial equipment. This position plays a key role in coordinating mechanical, structural, and electrical engineering activities, improving CAD and 3D modeling processes, and ensuring engineering designs are accurate, manufacturable, and effectively integrated into production.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in mechanical or structural engineering, experience with complex industrial equipment, and the ability to work collaboratively across engineering and manufacturing teams.

Candidates must hold an active Professional Engineer (PE) license

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Engineering Design and CAD Development

  • Oversee the creation, development, and maintenance of accurate 2D CAD drawings, including fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, detailed component drawings, and supporting documentation.
  • Lead the transition from traditional 2D drafting to integrated 3D modeling and assembly design workflows.
  • Develop and maintain 3D equipment models that incorporate mechanical, structural, and electrical components.
  • Establish and maintain CAD standards, drawing templates, modeling practices, and revision control procedures.
  • Ensure engineering drawings and models provide the detail necessary for fabrication, machining, welding, electrical installation, and final assembly.
  • Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, simplify documentation, and standardize components.

Cross-Discipline Engineering Coordination

  • Work closely with electrical engineering to integrate control panels, wiring routes, cable paths, conduit, and related electrical components into equipment designs.
  • Coordinate mechanical, structural, and electrical design activities to ensure equipment functions as an integrated system.
  • Identify and resolve design conflicts before fabrication and assembly.
  • Ensure appropriate clearances, mounting provisions, access points, and installation requirements are incorporated into designs.
  • Improve coordination between 3D models, 2D drawings, bills of materials, and manufacturing documentation.

Manufacturing and Production Support

  • Collaborate with manufacturing, production control, purchasing, quality, and other departments to ensure engineering deliverables support production requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance to production personnel and assist in resolving design and fabrication issues.
  • Review shop drawings and engineering packages for accuracy, completeness, and manufacturability.
  • Support engineering changes and ensure proper documentation and revision control.
  • Incorporate feedback from fabrication, electrical assembly, and equipment testing into future designs and engineering standards.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce rework, improve production efficiency, and increase product quality and consistency.

Engineering Leadership and Development

  • Apply sound engineering judgment in reviewing mechanical and structural designs, calculations, and technical documentation.
  • Promote consistent engineering practices and adherence to applicable codes and standards.
  • Participate in engineering design reviews and technical problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and other technical personnel to improve engineering processes and design quality.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives across the engineering department.
  • Encourage knowledge sharing, technical development, and effective collaboration between engineering and manufacturing.

Qualifications and Requirements

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related engineering discipline.
  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license or demonstrated progress toward obtaining PE licensure.
  • Experience in mechanical and/or structural design, preferably involving industrial machinery, heavy equipment, or manufacturing.
  • Proficiency with CAD software and 3D modeling applications.
  • Ability to interpret and develop engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, fabrication methods, and mechanical assembly.
  • Ability to coordinate technical requirements across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with engineering, manufacturing, and production personnel.

Preferred

  • Active Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification or successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.
  • Experience with structural analysis, engineering calculations, and applicable design codes.
  • Experience designing heavy industrial equipment or machinery.
  • Experience integrating mechanical, structural, and electrical systems.
  • Experience implementing or improving 3D CAD workflows and engineering documentation standards.
  • Experience improving engineering processes and collaborating across technical departments.
  • Familiarity with bills of materials, engineering change processes, and manufacturing documentation.

Professional Engineering Licensure

Erie Strayer values professional engineering licensure and is seeking a candidate who either currently holds a PE license or is committed to obtaining one.

Candidates who have not yet obtained their PE license should be able to demonstrate meaningful progress toward licensure, such as EIT certification, completion of the FE examination, or qualifying engineering experience.

Work Environment

This position involves a combination of engineering design work and hands-on collaboration with manufacturing personnel in an industrial production environment.

The employee may be required to enter manufacturing areas to review equipment, evaluate designs, troubleshoot production issues, and coordinate engineering changes.
