About this position
About UsEl Lopo is a 50-seat tapas, sherry, and vermouth bar in Lower Nob Hill with a loyal neighborhood following since 2019. We pair imported Spanish pantry staples (tinned seafood, charcuterie) with local, seasonal produce. Our kitchen is small (a convection oven and a couple of burners), so we win on ingredients, not elaborate technique.
About You
- You've mastered prep and line cooking and you're ready to lead
- Fast, clean, and organized, without cutting corners on quality or safety
- Self-starter who builds your own systems
- You lead by example and would rather be respected than feared
- You love Spanish cooking and seasonal, ingredient-driven food
- Strong English for ordering, vendors, and working closely with ownership; Spanish is a big plus
- Bonus: bread or garde manger experience
The Role
You'll lead our kitchen and a team of two cooks. This is a hands-on job: about 90% cooking, plus ordering, inventory, prep lists, and scheduling. Most importantly, you'll shape the menu. We change with the seasons, and we want your dishes on it.
It's not glamorous. Some hours you're the chef, some hours you're the dishwasher. But you'll have real ownership, and we'll invest in you.
Pay and Schedule
- $22/hr base + tips (averaging about $10/hr) = roughly $29–34/hr
- Full-time, steady 40 hours a week
- Flexible scheduling as long as the kitchen runs smoothly and labor stays on budget
- No 14-hour days; we're serious about work-life balance
