Overview
We are seeking a hands-on Technical Lead to personally build, configure, and secure Human Capital Management (HCM) software for client organizations. This is an individual-contributor-heavy role for someone who wants to stay deep in the code — writing, debugging, and shipping full-stack Java features and payroll tax logic daily. The only leadership expected is technical: removing blockers, ensuring code quality, and running code reviews. This is not a role focused on strategy, roadmaps, org-level planning, or people management.
Key Responsibilities
Hands-On Development (majority of role)
Write and maintain production code across the full stack — Java back-end services and strong front-end/UI components (Angular, React, or similar).
Personally configure and update multi-state payroll, local tax jurisdiction logic, and regulatory compliance rules within the codebase.
Build and maintain automated tax update pipelines, integration jobs, and system configuration logging.
Debug production issues, resolve payroll tax data anomalies, and implement fixes directly.
Security & Vulnerability Remediation (hands-on)
Personally triage, patch, and remediate system security vulnerabilities.
Implement and maintain Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) logic in code.
Apply data encryption protocols and ensure code-level compliance with GDPR/CCPA and SOC 2 requirements.
Technical Leadership (limited to the following)
Remove technical blockers for the team as they arise.
Ensure code quality through hands-on code reviews.
Set standards by writing reference implementations, not through documentation or process.
Required Qualifications
Experience: 8+ years of hands-on full-stack Java development, ideally within enterprise HCM/payroll systems.
Domain Expertise: Working knowledge of payroll tax withholding rules, multi-state/local compliance logic, and how to implement them in code.
Security Knowledge: Practical experience implementing encryption, RBAC, and compliance controls (GDPR/CCPA, SOC 2) at the code level.
Technical Stack: Strong Java back-end skills plus front-end/UI development (Angular, React, or similar), REST/microservices, CI/CD tooling.
Work Style: Genuinely wants to code daily — this role is measured by commits and shipped fixes, not roadmaps or reports.
Highly Preferred
Direct experience configuring payroll tax engines or HCM platform code.
Experience building automated compliance/tax-update pipelines.
