About this position

Mail Handler Assistants load, unload and move mail and packages through postal facilities. Key responsibilities

  • Load, unload and move mail and packages within a postal facility.
  • Separate outgoing bulk mail and prepare it for transportation or distribution.
  • Move mail between trucks, sorting equipment and designated processing areas.
  • Operate authorized mail-handling equipment after receiving required instruction.
  • Weigh mail, rewrap damaged packages and complete other mail-handling duties when assigned.
  • Follow safety and ergonomic procedures while working as part of a team.

Required qualifications

  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • No prior work experience is required; new employees receive comprehensive on-the-job training.
  • Applicants must successfully complete any required pre-employment assessment and background check. A driver's license is not required for this position unless otherwise noted in the vacancy.
  • Ability to lift, carry and move mail, packages or equipment weighing up to 70 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation; ability to stand, bend and reach for extended periods; and willingness to follow all workplace safety procedures and use required personal protective equipment.

Work environment and physical requirements

Compensation and benefits

USD 39562.00–40602.00 per year.

This is generally a non-career appointment that may be offered for a term of up to 360 days, with possible reappointment based on operational needs. Eligible Mail Handler Assistants earn paid leave at the rate of one hour for every 20 hours in pay status, receive holiday pay for designated postal holidays, and receive contractual wage increases.

Eligible employees may enroll in the USPS Health Benefits Plan with a Postal Service premium contribution. Employees who receive a subsequent appointment may become eligible for additional health coverage, dental and vision insurance, flexible spending accounts, and long-term-care insurance under the applicable eligibility rules.
