About this position

About the Church

Founded in 1831, Government Street Presbyterian Church is a downtown, mission-minded congregation known for its historic Greek Revival architecture and exceptional music programs. The church describes itself as a welcoming, traditional church family and has been led by Rev. Rebekah Abel Lamar since 2019. The campus occupies a quarter block in Mobile, serving a membership of 350 with a deep commitment to Christian education across all generations.

About the Ministry

The Christian formation ministry at GSPC oversees faith formation from birth through adulthood, currently serving approximately 29 children and 27 youth. While the children’s and youth ministries feature strong assets like a beloved VBS, a traditional Sunday School, and annual youth trips to Montreat, it is currently in a "rebuilding" phase focused on stabilizing attendance and deepening parental engagement.

GSPC’s commitment to growth extends to the adults of the congregation, which maintain a vibrant culture of learning through weekly Sunday School, multiple Bible studies, "Theology on Tap," and seasonal educational series.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a hope-filled, enthusiastic, and relational leader who can serve as a "visionary architect" to stabilize and grow the church’s faith formation programs. They should be a self-starter with a passion for kids and families, capable of navigating a diverse theological environment while recruiting and empowering a fresh team of volunteers.

  • Children’s Ministry & Family Faith Formation: Develop and implement a robust plan for faith formation that creates a "pipeline" from birth through adulthood, including active integration of children into the life of the church.

  • Youth Ministry Strategy & Volunteer Leadership: Provide vision and strategic leadership for youth ministry, including recruiting, equipping, and shepherding a healthy team of adult volunteers.

  • Adult Faith Formation: Partner with the CF committee to select curriculum and execute a comprehensive plan for adult spiritual growth, responding to congregational requests.

  • Administration & Communication: Serve as the primary voice to the congregation for all faith formation opportunities and participate in collaborative staff leadership.

  • Pastoral Duties (for Associate Pastor candidates): Preaching, worship leadership, and pastoral care as negotiated with the Senior Pastor.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent experience) in Christian Education, Theology, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing ministries for children, youth, families, or Christian formation, especially in volunteer recruitment and leadership.

  • Commitment to Reformed theology and the mission of the PCUSA.

  • Proficiency in technical tools (Canva, Google Docs, and Realm church management software).

  • Strong organizational and communication skills across all generations.

  • Ordination as a PC(USA) minister of Word and Sacrament or Candidate for Ministry who is certified as ready to receive a call (for Associate Pastor candidates).
