About this position

Job Description

About the Role

We build luxury custom homes in the Phoenix area, and every one of them runs through accounting. We’re looking for an accountant who’s ready for their next step: someone who’s been doing more than their title says and wants to own the numbers on real projects.

You’ll work side by side with our Controller, who will teach you job costing, WIP and month-end close the way they’re done in construction. You’ll own pieces of it in your first month and a lot more of it within a year. If you want to grow your career in construction accounting, this is the seat to learn it in.

What You’ll Own

  • Job costing for every active build: record and reconcile labor, materials, subcontractors, and equipment costs by project.
  • Build the budget vs. actual cost analysis for each project and flag anything off track to the Controller.
  • Prepare monthly work-in-progress (WIP) schedules with the Controller, taking full ownership as you get comfortable, and dig into project profitability.
  • Run accounts payable for our suppliers (concrete, tile, plumbing, electrical, etc.) and subcontractors, and make sure our purchasing and approval policies are followed.
  • Track change orders from approval to billing to cost, so nothing slips through the cracks.
  • Manage customer billing and receivables: milestone invoices, draw schedules, and collections follow-up.
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and loan accounts.
  • Own your piece of month-end and year-end close, including journal entries.
  • Help maintain the cash flow forecast based on project schedules.
  • Help with Arizona TPT (sales tax) and prime contracting tracking and reporting.
  • Support workers’ comp and insurance audits.
  • Be part of how we run the company. We use EOS (the Entrepreneurial Operating System): clear quarterly goals, a weekly team meeting, and no guessing about what matters.

What We’re Looking For

  • 3+ years of accounting experience, ideally in construction or another project-based business
  • Hands-on exposure to job costing and project-based accounting. You don’t need to have run WIP on your own; we’ll teach you.
  • Comfortable with reconciliations, journal entries, and helping with month-end close
  • Experience with QuickBooks or a similar accounting system
  • Strong Excel skills: pivot tables, lookups, and building a schedule from scratch
  • Curious and coachable: you ask “why,” take feedback well, and want to keep growing

Bonus Points

  • Degree in accounting or finance (equivalent experience counts the same)
  • JobTread or Buildertrend experience
  • Arizona TPT / prime contracting experience
  • Bilingual English / Spanish (you’ll talk with subs and vendors)
  • Familiarity with EOS, Ninety.io, or AI tools

What Success Looks Like

  • First 30 days: You know every active job, our chart of accounts, and how purchases get approved. You’ve worked through your first month-end close with the Controller.
  • 60 days: Job costing and AP run through you cleanly. Coding errors get caught when they’re entered, not at close.
  • 90 days: You prepare the monthly WIP schedule with the Controller reviewing it, and your part of close lands on a predictable calendar.

Why You’ll Want This Job

  • Room to grow: A Controller who will teach you construction accounting end to end, and a clear next step as you take on more.
  • Real ownership: A small team where your work gets seen and your opinion counts.
  • A product you’ll be proud of: Luxury custom homes and projects you’ll drive by and point at.
  • Benefits: Medical, Dental, Vision, 401(k), PTO, Bonus Opportunity

If you’ve been doing more than your title says and you’re ready for the next step, we’d love to hear from you.
