About this position

PSE Sales & Services/Distribution Associates help customers at postal retail counters and support the daily operation of a Post Office. Responsibilities may include explaining postal products, processing purchases and returns, supporting passport services where assigned, organizing retail displays and completing distribution-related duties identified in the individual vacancy notice.

Key responsibilities

  • Welcome customers and help them understand available postal products and services.
  • Process purchases, returns and other authorized customer transactions accurately.
  • Explain mailing options, service features and applicable requirements.
  • Support passport-related services when assigned and properly authorized.
  • Organize retail displays and help maintain a clean, presentable customer area.
  • Complete mail-distribution or operational duties included in the vacancy.
  • Follow transaction, privacy, security and customer-service procedures.

Required qualifications

  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • No prior work experience is required; new employees receive comprehensive on-the-job training. Prior customer-service or retail experience is helpful but not required.
  • Applicants must successfully complete any required pre-employment assessment and background check.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift or move items weighing up to 70 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation; and willingness to follow all workplace safety procedures.

Work environment and physical requirements

Work generally takes place at a postal retail counter and within supporting operational areas. The role may involve regular public interaction, transaction processing, prolonged standing and distribution duties.

Compensation and benefits

USD 44595.00–45635.00 per year.

Salary information source: Same PSE Level 6 scale as PSE Mail Processing Clerk Confidence: High. Confirm pay and eligibility details on the application website.

This is generally a non-career Postal Support Employee appointment. Eligible employees may earn paid leave at the rate of one hour for every 20 hours in pay status, receive holiday pay for designated postal holidays, and receive contractual wage increases. Eligible employees may enroll in the USPS Health Benefits Plan with a Postal Service contribution toward the premium.

Employees who receive a subsequent appointment may become eligible for additional health coverage options, dental and vision insurance, flexible spending accounts, and long-term-care insurance, subject to current plan and service requirements. Eligible veterans may also qualify for Wounded Warrior Leave. The position may provide an opportunity to move into a career postal appointment, but career conversion is not guaranteed.
