About this position

Rural Carrier Associates deliver and collect mail and packages along rural routes. They may sort mail before departure, provide postal products or services to customers and work independently in different weather conditions. Some assignments require the use of a personal vehicle when a postal vehicle is unavailable; include this only when stated in the requisition.

Key responsibilities

Required qualifications

  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
  • No prior work experience is required; new employees receive comprehensive on-the-job training.
  • A valid state driver's license, a safe driving record and successful completion of any required pre-employment assessment are required.
  • A personal vehicle may be required for this route, depending on the vacancy. Employees who use a personal vehicle are reimbursed for mileage in accordance with current postal guidelines.
  • Ability to lift and carry mail and packages weighing up to 70 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation; ability to stand, walk and reach for extended periods, including outdoor work in varying weather conditions; and willingness to follow all vehicle and workplace safety procedures.

Work environment and physical requirements

Work generally includes sorting mail indoors and delivering outdoors by vehicle along rural routes. Conditions may include changing weather, frequent vehicle entry and exit and handling mail and packages throughout the route.

  • Specific work days, hours and shift assignments will be provided by the hiring facility. Schedules may include early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays based on operational needs.
  • A personal vehicle may be required for this route, depending on the vacancy. Employees who use a personal vehicle are reimbursed for mileage in accordance with current postal guidelines.

Compensation and benefits

USD 45531.00–47611.00 per year.

This is a non-career position that may provide a path to a career rural-carrier appointment. Eligible Rural Carrier Associates may enroll in the USPS Health Benefits Plan with a Postal Service contribution toward the premium. Dental and vision coverage may also be available under the applicable eligibility rules.

After completing the required period of continuous service, employees may become eligible for additional Postal Service Health Benefits Program options, flexible spending accounts, and long-term-care insurance.
