About this position
We are seeking an experienced Tax Senior to join our tax practice. This position is intended for a tax professional who has developed a strong technical foundation in public accounting and, equally importantly, the judgment to independently manage assignments and keep work moving efficiently.
The successful candidate will be comfortable taking ownership of tax returns from receipt of client information through preparation for review. We are looking for someone who can identify and resolve routine issues independently, recognize when an assignment has become more complex than anticipated, and present focused questions when additional guidance is warranted.
This is not an entry-level position.
Responsibilities
- Prepare federal and multi-state individual, partnership, S corporation, C corporation, and fiduciary income tax returns.
- Independently manage assigned returns from receipt of client information through preparation for review.
- Review client information and prior-year workpapers to identify missing, inconsistent, or unusual items.
- Resolve routine tax and accounting issues independently while recognizing when additional research or consultation is appropriate.
- Identify changes in the complexity or scope of an assignment and communicate those issues promptly.
- Research tax matters efficiently and develop specific, well-supported questions when consultation is needed.
- Remain cognizant of time incurred relative to the complexity and materiality of an issue and avoid unnecessary or unproductive work.
- Prepare tax projections and quarterly estimated tax calculations.
- Maintain and analyze partner and shareholder basis schedules.
- Work with fixed asset and depreciation schedules, including additions, dispositions, and related tax treatment.
- Analyze K-1 reporting and other common partnership and S corporation tax issues.
- Prepare organized and complete workpapers supporting tax return positions and conclusions.
- Assist with federal and state tax notices and other tax compliance matters.
- Communicate directly and professionally with clients regarding missing information and routine tax matters.
- Serve as a technical resource to junior staff and provide guidance on routine tax preparation and workflow questions.
- Manage multiple assignments and filing deadlines without continual supervision.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.
- 4+ years of recent public accounting tax experience.
- Significant hands-on experience preparing Forms 1040, 1065, and 1120-S.
- Experience preparing moderately complex individual and closely held business tax returns.
- Strong understanding of federal income taxation and familiarity with multi-state individual and business filings.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage tax assignments and competing deadlines.
- Strong professional judgment, including the ability to distinguish between issues that can be resolved independently and those requiring consultation.
- Ability to research unfamiliar tax issues efficiently without losing sight of materiality, deadlines, and the scope of an engagement.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
- CPA or EA designation, or progress toward professional certification, is preferred.
- Experience with CCH ProSystem fx Tax, CCH Axcess, CCH Engagement, and QuickBooks is preferred.
