Job Description: Journeyman Electrician (E5) 

 

Pay Range: $26 - $30 

 

Position Summary 

The Journeyman Electrician (E5) independently performs skilled electrical installation, maintenance, and repair work in accordance with applicable codes, project specifications, and company standards. This role requires a high level of technical competency, safety awareness, and accountability for quality workmanship, while providing guidance and mentorship to apprentices. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Install, modify, maintain, and repair electrical systems and components 
  • Read, interpret, and work from electrical drawings, schematics, and specifications 
  • Perform conduit installation, wire pulling, terminations, and equipment hookups 
  • Troubleshoot electrical systems and identify root causes of issues 
  • Perform testing, inspections, and verification of completed work 
  • Ensure all work complies with NEC, local codes, and project requirements 
  • Mentor and guide apprentice electricians 
  • Coordinate daily tasks with lead electricians or foremen 
  • Identify material shortages, design conflicts, or safety concerns and communicate them to supervision 
  • Participate in job hazard analyses (JHAs), permits, and lockout/tagout procedures 
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas 
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety meetings, and required training 
  • Report hazards, near misses, and incidents immediately 
  • Perform other duties as assigned consistent with skill level 

 

Qualifications 

  • High school diploma or GED required 
  • State-issued Journeyman Electrician license (where applicable) 
  • Operational understanding and working knowledge of the current NEC code 

and industry best practices 

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision 
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail 
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills 

 

Required Certifications and Training 

  • Journeyman Electrician license 
  • OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety 
  • NFPA 70E (Electrical Safety) 
  • Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) training 
  • First Aid / CPR (preferred) 
  • Jobsite-specific and equipment-specific training as required 
  • Arc Flash Awareness Training 

 

 

Tools & Equipment 

  • Journeyman Electrician must provide and maintain their own basic hand tools customary to the electrical trade 
  • All hand tools must be in safe working condition and comply with company and jobsite safety requirements 

Experience 

  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship program 
  • Typically 4+ years of electrical trade experience 

 

Physical Requirements 

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds regularly 
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, and work overhead for extended periods 
  • Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, and elevated work platforms 
  • Ability to work in hot, cold, noisy, dusty, or confined environments 
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, FR clothing, and fall protection 

 

Work Environment 

  • Industrial and commercial construction jobsites 
  • Indoor and outdoor work 
  • Exposure to energized electrical systems, moving machinery, and varying weather conditions 
  • Work hours may include nights, weekends, and overtime as required 

 

Supervision 

  • Works with minimal supervision; may provide direction to apprentices and helpers 

 

Safety Expectations 

  • Comply with all company and site safety policies and procedures 
  • Lead by example in safe work practices and hazard awareness 
  • Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions exist 
  • Demonstrate accountability for personal and crew safety

Successful performance in this role supports advancement to Lead Electrician (E6) based on technical skill, leadership ability, safety performance, and company needs.
