About this position
Motor Vehicle Operators transport mail between postal locations while following assigned routes, schedules and safety requirements. The role may involve loading and unloading mail, operating a mail truck in different weather conditions, inspecting the vehicle during use and reporting mechanical defects, accidents or operating concerns. - Operate an assigned mail vehicle along established routes and schedules.
- Pick up, transport and deliver mail and packages between designated locations.
- Load and unload mail or transportation equipment when assigned.
- Inspect the vehicle during use and report accidents, defects or mechanical failures.
- Follow traffic laws, vehicle procedures and postal-safety requirements.
- Complete required route and vehicle documentation.
- Perform limited emergency duties only when authorized and trained.
Required qualifications
- A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Prior commercial driving experience is preferred; equivalent training or certification may also be considered.
- A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required, with the class and endorsements (such as air brake or hazardous materials) determined by the specific vehicle and route assignment.
- Applicants must have a safe driving record and meet all applicable federal and state motor carrier safety requirements.
- Applicants must successfully complete any required pre-employment assessment, medical certification and background check.
- Ability to lift and carry mail, packages or equipment weighing up to 70 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation; ability to sit for extended periods while driving; and willingness to follow all vehicle, loading-dock and workplace safety procedures.
