You can enjoy an area of audit without wanting it to become your whole job.
If employee benefit plans are your thing, there’s room to build that specialism here. You’ll also work with privately held businesses and not for profit organisations, keeping the variety and broader experience you might miss in a more specialised role.
This independent Chicagoland CPA firm of around 150 people has grown steadily without private equity. The partners are still involved in the work, so you’ll get to know them, learn from them and build your own relationships with clients.
They also have a Supervisor level, giving you a clear next step between Senior and Manager. If you’re already taking on that responsibility, they’re open to recognising it. If you’re working towards it, a dedicated mentor programme gives you someone invested in helping you get there.
Several people in senior leadership have come through from this level. You’ll have people around you who understand that next step because they’ve made it themselves.
You’ll run engagements from planning through to financial statements, review workpapers and help junior staff develop. There’s also scope to get involved in compilations, reviews and business tax returns, so you can understand more of what’s going on for your clients.
Busy season is typically around 55 hours, with a smaller push in the fall. The rest of the year is closer to the high 30s, with hybrid working and summer Fridays too.
You’ll need at least three years of public accounting audit experience, including both employee benefit plans and privately held, for profit businesses. Not for profit audit experience would also be welcome. A CPA or progress towards it would be ideal.
