About this position

Job details

**IN ORDER TO BE CONSIDERED: Apply at https://solette.com/join-solette. Applications submitted through Culinary Agents will not be considered.

Solette is a marketplace that matches vetted private chefs with households for weekly in-home meal prep. We help busy families, new parents, and older adults get tailored home-cooked meals on the table, and we help chefs build steady income on their own schedule.

Freelance Private Chef

For a typical session, you plan a tailored menu with the client, cook a week of family-style meals (usually 12 to 18 servings) in one session in their kitchen, label and store everything in the fridge, and leave the kitchen spotless. Clients pick their chef and keep the same chef every week, so you build a roster of regular households instead of chasing one-off gigs. Special-occasion dinners come up too.

What you get:

  • You set your own rate and schedule
  • Recurring work with the same households every week, across Manhattan and Brooklyn
  • We bring the clients and handle booking and payments
  • When you shop, groceries go on a Solette card, so you never front the cost
  • If you travel, we can line up coverage with enough notice
  • Any cuisine. Our chefs cook everything from Caribbean to healthy Latin American to healthy American

If you can do the following, we’d love to hear from you:

  • You cook delicious, wholesome food that keeps well in the fridge and reheats nicely
  • You have a repertoire of at least 12 mains (16 to 20 is better) across vegetarian, seafood, poultry, beef, and lamb, plus at least 8 sides
  • You’re creative with menu planning and flexible with special requests
  • You’re friendly, reliable, and communicate well with clients
  • Nice to have but not required: experience cooking for new parents or older adults
Responsibilities:
  • Preparing customized meal plans based on each household’s preferences and dietary needs, keeping in mind budget and seasonality
  • Preparing grocery lists
  • Shopping for groceries before sessions (upon client request)
  • Cooking in the client’s kitchen in accordance with food health and safety regulations
  • Labeling and storing food in the fridge or freezer
  • Providing reheating instructions
  • Leaving the kitchen spotless
  • Taking client feedback and adjusting menus week to week
Requirements:
  • Food Handler’s Certificate
  • Willingness to undergo a background check upon request
  • Vetting includes a menu review and a cooking trial

Compensation details
Per session. You set your rate. Chef rates on Solette run from $220 to $300+ per session, plus a $40 shopping fee when the client wants you to shop.

Required skills

  • Cooking Wholesome Family-Style Meals
  • Weekly Menu Planning for Households
  • Customizing Menus for Dietary Needs and Preferences
  • Client Communication and Service
  • Food Safety and Kitchen Cleanliness
  • Reliability and Consistency
