About this position

Maintenance Mechanics perform preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance throughout postal facilities. Responsibilities may include repairing mechanical components, motors, belts, bearings and basic control systems; assisting with plumbing, heating, cooling and refrigeration work; and installing, adjusting or replacing smaller pieces of operating equipment.

Key responsibilities

  • Perform preventive, corrective and predictive maintenance tasks.
  • Repair or assist with plumbing, heating, cooling and refrigeration systems.
  • Maintain basic control circuitry, bearings, chains, motors, belts and related components.
  • Assemble, install, replace, modify or adjust operating equipment.
  • Assist skilled maintenance employees with equipment disassembly, relocation and reassembly.
  • Inspect equipment and report identified defects or maintenance needs.
  • Complete required maintenance records and work orders.
  • Follow equipment-isolation, tool and workplace-safety procedures.

Required qualifications

  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required; relevant vocational or technical training is preferred.
  • Prior hands-on maintenance or mechanical experience is preferred; relevant certifications, apprenticeships or equivalent training may also be considered.
  • Applicants must successfully complete any required pre-employment assessment and background check. A valid driver's license may be required depending on the vacancy.
  • Ability to lift and carry tools, parts or equipment weighing up to 70 pounds; ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb and work in varying facility conditions; and willingness to follow all equipment, electrical and workplace safety procedures, including use of required personal protective equipment.

Work environment and physical requirements

Work generally takes place in postal facilities, equipment areas and maintenance spaces. Assignments may involve powered equipment, mechanical components, tools and facility systems. Exact noise, protective-equipment, schedule and physical conditions must come from the requisition.

Compensation and benefits

USD 59281.00–77281.00 per year.

This position is generally offered as a career postal appointment.
