About this position

Maintenance Mechanics MPE support the equipment that processes and moves mail through postal facilities. The role involves troubleshooting mechanical, electrical and electronic systems, testing equipment, correcting malfunctions and completing preventive maintenance and inspections. Employees may also prepare work orders and estimate the time and materials needed for repairs.

Key responsibilities

  • Test, diagnose and maintain mechanical, electrical and electronic mail-processing systems.
  • Observe equipment operation to identify the source of malfunctions.
  • Correct equipment problems and help restore reliable system performance.
  • Perform preventive-maintenance inspections on mail-processing and powered industrial equipment.
  • Review and follow established maintenance procedures and standards.
  • Initiate work orders and estimate the time and materials needed for repairs.
  • Document completed maintenance and identified equipment issues.
  • Follow equipment-isolation and workplace-safety procedures.

Required qualifications

  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required; relevant vocational or technical training is preferred.
  • Prior hands-on experience maintaining mechanical, electrical or electronic equipment is preferred; relevant certifications or equivalent training may also be considered.
  • Applicants must successfully complete any required pre-employment assessment and background check. A valid driver's license may be required depending on the vacancy.
  • Ability to lift and carry tools, parts or equipment weighing up to 70 pounds; ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb and work around active machinery; and willingness to follow all equipment-isolation, electrical and workplace safety procedures, including use of required personal protective equipment.

Work environment and physical requirements

Work generally takes place in a postal processing facility around automated mail-processing and powered industrial equipment. Assignments may include inspections, planned maintenance and troubleshooting during active or scheduled maintenance periods.

Compensation and benefits

USD 74422.00–83710.00 per year.

This position is generally offered as a career postal appointment.
