About this position

Lead Automotive Technicians combine advanced vehicle-repair work with technical leadership. They diagnose difficult mechanical and electronic problems, perform complex repairs, inspect vehicles, determine required work and help assign or schedule repairs. They may also guide technicians and mechanics through challenging diagnostic and maintenance procedures.

Key responsibilities

  • Diagnose difficult mechanical, electrical and electronic vehicle problems.
  • Perform complex repairs and maintenance on vehicles in the postal fleet.
  • Provide technical guidance to automotive technicians and mechanics.
  • Inspect vehicles and determine the repairs or maintenance required.
  • Help assign, prioritize and schedule repair work.
  • Use computerized and electronic diagnostic equipment.
  • Review repair quality and maintain accurate work-order and vehicle records.
  • Follow shop, road-test and equipment-safety procedures.

Required qualifications

  • A high school diploma, GED, or equivalent is required; relevant vocational or technical training is preferred.
  • Several years of journey-level automotive repair experience are preferred, including experience providing technical guidance to other technicians.
  • Applicants must successfully complete any required pre-employment assessment and background check. A valid driver's license may be required depending on the vacancy.
  • Ability to lift and carry tools, parts or equipment weighing up to 70 pounds; ability to stand, bend, kneel and work in varying shop conditions; and willingness to follow all equipment, electrical and workplace safety procedures, including use of required personal protective equipment.

Work environment and physical requirements

Work generally takes place in a vehicle maintenance facility and may include diagnostic bays, powered tools, vehicle lifts, road tests or emergency road calls. Exact shift, driving, protective-equipment and physical requirements must come from the requisition.

Compensation and benefits

USD 55000.00–78000.00 per year.

This position is generally offered as a career postal appointment.
